Prioritisation of surgical work during the coronavirus pandemic

Updated 20th July 2020

Dear Colleagues,

In March NHSE asked RCS England to assist in the development of guidance that would allow individual hospitals and regions to sustain surgical services during the Covid pandemic. The aim was to create a sense of equity between specialties and via the FSSA, all surgical specialities responded. Within each specialty procedures were placed in levels of priority, that broadly defined work to be done as an emergency, that which can be deferred for a given period of time and interventions that might be delayed for a substantial period of time.

Whilst this is not a perfect system we hope you will find it helpful prioritising your surgical work in these challenging times.
