Introduction for Parents
What is Paediatric Surgery?
Our surgeons look after and treat newborns with abnormalities of the lungs, intestines, kidneys, liver; children with cancer; children who are in desperate need of organ transplants such as the, intestines or kidneys. You might say it is easier to describe what we don’t do! (That’s heart, brain and bone surgery, in case you wondered.)
What does the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons do?
We are a registered charity and our work includes:
- setting standards in paediatric surgical care
- influencing national policies that impact on the surgical care of children
- providing educational events to support training new surgeons
- continuing medical education for consultants and allied health professionals
- funding and supporting collaborative research that directly impacts on patient care
- professional guidance and support
- teaching surgeons overseas in low to middle income countries
We are not a regulatory body and do not employ surgeons. All our surgeons work on our behalf on a voluntary basis.
How do we fund our work?
We are a registered UK Charity and rely entirely on membership subscriptions, our generous donors and sponsorship to fund our work. Our members offer their own time to teach, conduct research and provide professional support to both colleagues and families. Any financial support that can be offered would be gratefully received.
Details on how to donate to BAPS can be found on our Donations page.
If you are interested in donating or sponsoring the Association for a particular project, please contact our Honorary Secretary by emailing [email protected].
